Mr. Maheswar Barui exemplifies the essence of the “Hope of Light”, serving as an inspiration to all, despite being a marginalized farmer and having lost a leg.
Maheshwar Barui, who resides in Shibramapur village within the Namkhana block, District 24 Parganas South, previously worked at a sawmill, supporting four members. Following the loss of his leg in an accident in 2015, his financial difficulties worsened.
In 2022, he became a participant in this project through the initiative of PUS, which aimed to support marginal farmers, where he received training in organic farming and vegetable cultivation. Additionally, PUS supplied him with a variety of vegetable seeds.
He expressed his gratitude for the combined support of training and the provision of various seeds, which enabled him to attain impressive yields on his 62.51 decimal agricultural land, resulting in the following :
300 kg of eggplant |
500 kg of chilies |
100 kg of ridge gourd |
150 kg of pumpkin |
100 kg of bottle gourd |
200 kg of cucumber in a year. |
This allowed his family to attain self-sufficiency in vegetables and created a surplus, resulting in a monthly income of ₹9,000 from market sales.
The exceptional quality and nutritional value of the organic produce led to a high local demand. Furthermore, Maheshwar Barui has been actively sharing his expertise in organic farming with other marginal farmers in Shibramapur village.
He expressed his profound gratitude to Palli Unnayan Samiti for the transformative impact they have had on his life.
