Protection of Adolescent Girls from Underage Marriage

Underage marriage is a marriage where either the girl is below age of 18 or the man is below age of 21. Most of underage marriages take place with adolescent girl affect their sexual health and well-being. It forces them out of education and into a life of poor prospects, with increased risk of violence, abuse, ill health or early death. Underage marriage often limits the opportunity for education to shaping the future of young girls, consequently entrapping them in the poverty cycle as unskilled labor

For the prevention of the issue, project activities capacities the pre-adolescents and adolescents to strengthen capacity as they are the main target group.  Project personnel, in collaboration with key stakeholders are dedicated to raising awareness on the devastating impacts of underage marriage, trafficking, school dropout, and child labor through various forums such as meetings, training sessions, and workshops. They become active against underage marriage and other forms of violence against women and young girls.

Objective

To build-up capacity & skills towards self-reliance so that the underage marriage, abuse, violence trafficking and child labour will reduce through community participation in 32 villages in 2 Blocks in the District of South 24 Parganas.

Formation of GSB (Gram Suraksha Bahini), KSB (Kishory Suraksha Bahini) and (CP) Child Parliament in 16 new villages and also conducting Community Awareness Meeting, Mass Campaign, School Sensitization, Parents Meeting, Rallies, Street Corner, Wall Writing, Banner, Posters, Brochure towards reduce under age marriage and Child Labour at 16 New and 16 old villages.

To link the GSB, KSB and Schools Children with Government Entitlement to access assistance and support from local Panchayet, Child Line, Police & Administration for prevention and necessary action against underage marriage & Child Labour.

Achievements

  • 2900 community women are aware about the bad results of underage marriage, human trafficking and the consequence of unsafe migration.
  • 22 Child marriage have been stopped by GSB & KSB with the support of local police and PRI administration.
  • All GSB Members aware about the bad effect of underage marriage, school dropout, child labor and different trap and temptations Trafficking.
  • Altogether 849 adolescent school students aware about bad effect of underage Marriage making aware to their Friends, neighbor and relative.
  • The incident of underage marriage has been reduced in target villages as a result of regular meetings.
  • 350 community members are getting the benefits of SASPHUW government schemes.
