A potential occurrence of Cyclone Shakti had anticipated to impact Gangetic West Bengal from May 23 to 28, 2025, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Consequently, the Palli Unnayan Samiti Baruipur organized a sensitization meeting focused on Early Warning Risk Reduction for the expected Cyclone “Shakti”. This meeting involved 90 selected school students and volunteers from the coastal regions of the Indian Sundarbans on May 20, 2025. The attendees received training on how to identify Multipurpose Cyclone Shelters (MPCS), effectively utilize social media for information dissemination, understand the evacuation process, and retract warnings if the cyclone does not affect the area.
Shortly following the meeting, the team conducted door-to-door visits in the villages to inform the villagers about the protective measures.
PUS advocates for elementary education, emphasizing the provision of Evening tuition, Educational materials up to higher secondary education. In this context, PUS established 9 Learning Centres that serve 338 pupils in the remote villages of Langalberia GP under Sonarpur Block. On 2nd, 22nd, 24th and 25th July 2025, the organization distributed educational materials like Exercise-Book , Drawing Book , Pestle color, Pencil Box, Water Bottle , Eraser, Pen , Pencil and Pencil Cutter.
PUS provides a six-month vocational in-house training program in basic and advanced beautician skills, specifically designed for young women from marginalized backgrounds to improve their family income and overall livelihood. On 20 & 26 June 2025, successful candidates were awarded certificates and Cosmetology Tools (Beautician Kit) to assist them in their ongoing practice as initial professional endeavors.
A Program Evaluation was conducted for the project titled “Sustainable Agro-Based Livelihood for Most Needy Small Farmers in Disaster Prone Coastal Part of Sundarban Islands” from 12 June to 18 July 2025, by a social activist. The evaluation primarily aimed to assess Efficiency, Effectiveness, Stakeholder Participation, Ownership, and Capacity Building. Furthermore, it examines the program’s outcomes and evaluates whether the intended results were achieved.
The report indicated that the PUS Baruipur was able to create a significant impact through the aforementioned project in the Namkhana and Patharpratima Blocks.
